Choosing the correct hairstyle is an important factor behind improving your appearance. Sure you could don a suit each day or wear your leather jacket like a badass but settling for an average haircut can damage your appearance.
In 2016 we saw more men growing their hair out and even though the man bun, the big trend of 2015 started to fade new styles were adopted. High fades were prominent, the Pompadour had a strong year and more men opted for a hair transplant in 2016 than ever before.
But what’s next for 2017? What hairstyles should you pay attention to?
In this article I highlight some popular men’s hairstyles for 2017.
Slicked Back
The slick back hairstyle is a real classic and something we’ve spoken about before, but the popularity for this classic cut is rising. This hairstyle is easy to manage, looks great with casual and formal outfits and most importantly the popularity makes it a cut most barbers should know.
Opting for a high fade on the sides and back and keeping the hair long on the top will really accentuate the hairstyle but opting for length on the sides and back will give you more of a classic spin on this popular hairstyle.
To achieve the slick back hairstyle your number one styling tool is the comb. Apply some pomade to your hands, rub your hands together and using your fingers guide the product through your hair backwards. Once the product has been applied with your fingers use a comb to create a neater look.
The Quiff
As always the quiff will continue it’s reign as the go to hairstyle for most men, keeping the back and the sides short and the length on top.
As time has progressed the fade on the side and backs has gotten higher, with more modern alternatives of the quiff sporting in some cases extremely high fades.
This hairstyle is all about texture so it’s ideal if you have medium length hair. The quiff itself doesn’t have to be super neat, the separated quiff or simply using just your finger tips to style the quiff will add some attitude to the hairstyle. Using a pompadour comb is a great way to keep the quiff neat but make the styling look effortless.
I personally prefer the quiff with a side part. With damp hair I’ll apply some mouse to my hair before use the blowdryer to blow my hair into place. Using a brush I’ll focus on the quiff brushing the hair slowly back as I apply the air alongside the side part creating some lift on top. A pea sized amount of Pomade is then placed in my hands and rubbed together and I use the product to keep the quiff and side part in place.
The French Crop
This cut boomed in the 1990s and has started to slowly make a return over the past 2 years. This hairstyle is all about keeping it effortless which will suit your style if you tend to dress casually day to day. Looking for something easy to manage? The french crop is perfect.
Long Hair
Channeling the 1970s long hair is still proving popular in 2017. A lot of men have started to grow their hair out, keeping it neatly parted to avoid the ‘messy’ look. To master this hairstyle you want to pay attention to the condition of your hair, maintaining it with an occasional trim and washing and conditioning regularly.
The issue with long hair is it’s a thin line between looking stylish and looking homeless. If you opt for a longer cut this year make sure you focus on the condition of your hair and maintaining an ideal length.
The Buzz Cut
I know what you’re thinking… the buzz cut? With the rise of men opting for transplants isn’t the days of a ‘one all over please mate’ over with? With the beard still being popular opting for a buzz cut and paying attention to the beard is something a lot of men are experimenting with.
Although the buzz cut is easy to master and easy to manage each morning it’s also something you need to focus on maintaining. Getting your hair cut every few weeks will help you maintain this style throughout the year.
Choosing A New Hairstyle
There’s no one size fits all, every man is different and everyone will suit and benefit from a different hairstyle.
The key things to think about when choosing a new hairstyle are your lifestyle, your day to day dress code and how much time you have to maintain it.
Think of it this way. The quiff is a great hairstyle but it takes some time to style and maintain. If you have 3 minutes spare in the morning to do your hair and if you work an active role it’s probably not going to benefit you. On the other hand the french crop, the slick back or the buzz cut will serve you better.
Consider how easy the haircut will be to manage day to day.
