7 Men’s Hairstyle Mistakes

Hairstyles and hair tutorials for men are something that we’re searching for. But what are some of the common mistakes that I see a lot of men make? And more importantly, what are some of the mistakes that I’ve made personally as well?

I’m going to highlight them in this article and tell you why they’re a mistake that you need to avoid.

1. Avoiding Lifestyle

The first mistake is choosing a hairstyle that doesn’t fit your lifestyle. If you haven’t got a lot of time in the morning, let’s say that you are someone who wakes up, only has a short period of time to get ready for their work, then you might want to avoid a hairstyle that takes a lot of time.

You don’t want to be spending time washing your hair, pre styling your hair, blow drying your hair, styling your hair, adding hair spray every single morning when you haven’t got a lot of time.

So you need to adjust your hairstyle appropriately. As well, if your job and your day to day lifestyle involves you doing a lot of physical activity, then going for a very neat, well styled hair cut and hairstyle probably isn’t your best bet.

On the other end, if you work in a corporate job and your lifestyle is mostly in the office, then you need to pay attention to your hairstyle and you need to make sure that it’s neat. You want to choose a hairstyle that’s perfect for your day to day lifestyle.

What’s going to be easy to manage every single day? And also don’t overestimate what you can do. If your hair isn’t very thick, if you haven’t got a lot of hair, don’t feel like you can go out and style a quiff.

Choose a hairstyle that suits your lifestyle and it’s going to save you a lot of time, but it’s also going to improve your appearance.

2. Worrying About Your Hair

I hold my hands up. This is a mistake that I made. If you’re a perfectionist when it comes to your hairstyle, please stop. No one cares about hair number 1,432 being out of place as much as you do.

If you’re someone who styles their hair in the morning and it has to be perfect, you leave the house, some wind puts something out of place in your hairstyle, and you’re consistently checking out every mirror, every car window, making sure that your hair is perfectly in place, please stop. It’s true.

No one worries about your hairstyle as much as you do, so stop being a perfectionist. Sometimes when your hairstyle looks quite effortless, it looks like you’ve just woken up and you’ve looked that good. It’s better than it being extremely styled and stuck down with as much product as you possibly can.

3. Using Too Much Hair Product

This is another mistake that another men make. In fact, again, it’s something that I’ve done in the past. I remember before I used to have this hairstyle and before I used to blow dry my hair to add volume.

applying product

I would literally just get as much product as I possibly could and whack it onto my hair hoping that my hair would stay in place throughout the day. All that happens is, when you use too much product it leaves your hair looking greasy and at the same time it weighs your hair down.

Only apply a small amount of product to your hair. Sometimes less is more.

4. Avoiding the Hair Dryer

I’ve already said this, but if you want to add volume to your hair, if you want to create a coif or any styles that requires some volume, you need to utilize the hairdryer. I never used to do it because I felt that it wasn’t very masculine.

If I was getting ready in the gym and there was hairdryers there, I literally wouldn’t use one because I thought if I get seen using a hairdryer someone might think that I’m too feminine. Someone might not think that I’m a real man.

But again, no one really cares about it, so if you do want to add some volume to your hair, if you’re finding that you’re using too much product to get it into place, use a hairdryer. It’s surprising how important the pre style is when it comes to achieving any hairstyle.

5. Overspending on Hair Products

There are so many on the market, so many different price points. You have matte clays. You have wet look waxes. You have gels. You have pre styles. You have so much available to you that sometimes it’s too much to choose from.

We can easily get drawn to different products as well because maybe you’ve seen on in a YouTube video, or maybe you’ve read one on a blog. And a lot of the time you’re actually over paying for a product which you can buy cheaper elsewhere, so it’s good to experiment with different products to see what’s right for you.

Also see which product is perfect for your hairstyle. Get some advice from your barber the next time you get your hair cut. See what products they’re using on your hair. Ask for some advice in terms of what best suits your hairstyle, but don’t overspend on products.

There’s so much more out there for you to spend your money on.

6. Washing Hair Too Often

A lot of people say if you wash your hair every single day, you’re actually reducing a lot of the natural oils in your hair. The issue is here, a lot of men think it’s dirty if you don’t actually was your hair every single day.

But you want to keep all those natural oils, and at the same time, if you haven’t washed your hair for maybe, let’s say one or two days, it’s actually going to make it easier for you to style in the morning. You don’t need to use much product.

You can literally get your hair wet in the shower, blow dry it into place, and because you’ve got product from, let’s say yesterday, your hair will actually fall naturally into place. Don’t leave it too long though.

Don’t leave it a week until you wash your hair, but maybe wash your hair every other day rather than every day.

7. Using A 2-in-1 Hair Wash

You know the ones, two in one. You get shampoo and conditioner in the same bottle. Yes, it saves you money, but it’s not actually doing the purpose that you want it to serve.

Invest in a shampoo and invest in a conditioner separately. Using a shampoo and conditioner combined isn’t doing any good to your hair whatsoever.

So there we have it, seven common mistakes that men make when it comes to their hairstyles. Like I’ve already said, some of these mistakes I’ve personally made as well.
