So I was having a conversation with my 92 year old Grandad just the other day.

We were talking about undershirts, and I could never understood why my Grandad always wore an undershirt everyday, without fail.

Then he went on to tell me a few of the benefits, so I decided to go ahead and do some research myself alongside buying an undershirt and putting it to the test.

Is an undershirt a must have in a mans wardrobe?

Should we wear an undershirt every day?

In this article and video I highlight the benefits alongside the 4 key mistakes that men make when wearing an undershirt.

The Undershirt

So for this feature I picked up this undershirt from Sloane Men. There’s a lot of undershirts available out there, but this seemed to be a more functional undershirt and after some basic research it ticked a lot of boxes.

Now wearing an undershirt has many benefits:

It keeps you warm – Layer an undershirt underneath what you’re wearing for an additional layer to keep you warm. If you don’t want to layer with overcoats, jackets, jumpers and so on, a simple undershirt can keep you warm

It can sometimes keep you cool – The undershirt from Sloane is made from a breathable cotton, which means it can keep you cool in the warmer months.

It protects you from sweat and deodorant stains – If you’re someone who sweats a lot, you know how unstylish those sweat patches can be. An undershirt can absorb that sweat, reducing the chance of sweat patches.

It can help keep your shirt tucked in – A good undershirt can serve the purpose of helping your shirt stay tucked in throughout the day.

But if you want to take advantage of some of those benefits, what do you need to consider?

1. Make Sure You Wear An Undershirt, Not A T-Shirt

This is something I’ve seen a lot of guys do in the past, myself included. It’s noticeable, it’s obvious you’re wearing a t-shirt under your shirt and it isn’t a good look.

At the same time there’s a lot that can go wrong if you decide to wear a t-shirt over an undershirt. It could be the fit, the colour, the collar or the material. There’s more to consider if you’re opting for a t-shirt over an undershirt, so keep it simple.

2. Don’t Wear White or Black Undershirts

This is the most common colour when it comes to undershirts, but you should avoid it at all costs.

Sloane offer different colours related to skin tones, and when you choose the undershirt that best matches your skin tone it almost makes the undershirt look invisible.

3. Don’t Show Your Undershirt

At no point should your undershirt show.

Avoid crew neck undershirts and go for something with a deep v-neck, especially if you like to keep two buttons undone on your shirt.

4. They Wear Baggy Undershirts

You want to wear an undershirts that’s very close fitting to your skin. If you’re wearing an undershirt that is loosely worn, it’s very likely that it will be visible underneath your shirt.

When the undershirt fits close to your skin it’s going to become unnoticeable.

Also when you wear an undershirt that’s very close fitting it makes it more comfortable, you also don’t realise you’re wearing one. It doesn’t restrict your movement and it doesn’t mess up the fit of the shirt itself.

So are you an undershirt kind of guy?

Let me know in the comments below some of the benefits you’ve discovered from wearing one.

Now I’ve tested it, am I an undershirt kind of guy? Will I wear an undershirt every day like my Grandad?

Truthfully no, but it’s good to have an undershirt in your wardrobe to tap into those benefits whenever you need too. Therefore it’s a wardrobe staple every man should own, but it’s not something you have to wear every single day.
